Sweet Cricket

Our sweet little puppy, Cricket was playing outside late Monday evening with Coleen. Somehow she slipped off the back step and caught her leg on the chain link fence and was not able to walk on it. We took her in early Tuesday morning to the vet and mid-afternoon the results came back. She had broken a bone so badly that the Vets here were not able to repair the break. They just didn't have the equipment necessary nor the skill for such a delicate surgery. They suggested sending her to Washington State University where they could repair the leg. However the cost would have been from $2,000-3,000 (possibly more). After talking it over we only had 2 other options, One being to put her down, which none of us really wanted to do.
The other was to have her leg amputated. We decided that was the best route for us and so she is having her leg taken off today. I will keep you all updated on her progress and recovery in the days to come.

  1. Awww, poor thing! Good news tho, even crickets can get around on 3 legs! :) I think she'll make a remarkable recovery, and live many long hobble wobbley years with you! :) We have a 3 legged cat, and as you know, had a 1 legged chicken! Hugs to you and the family, and esp Cricket!

  3. Oh Ida...this absolutely sounds like the best decision. My niece's sweet little dog only has three legs and he does just fine. Hope both Coleen and Cricket are okay.

  5. Ida I just want to say my thoughts are with you- I know the stress you must be going through and the anguish of your decision but animals seem to adapt really quickly when they have an amputation and being so young Cricket should recover quickly and be just as enegetic as before. Good luck to you all and my thoughts are with you all
